Sealants & Silicone

Choose a sanitary (anti-mould) silicone rather than a standard building sealant, and a colour to match the surface: clear for anywhere, white for light-coloured wall tiles, grey for dark floor tiles.

Clean and dry the surface well, run masking tape along both sides of the joint, apply the silicone with a gun in one continuous pass, smooth it with a wet finger or a spatula, then remove the tape before the silicone skins over.

Sanitary silicone contains a fungicide that limits black mould in damp areas; a cheaper standard building silicone doesn't offer that protection and blackens faster in a bathroom.
